Why lasagne is better than a baby grow

When I had my first baby, I was clueless about what babies really needed and also clueless about what I would really need. I ended up with an emergency caesarean birth and when I got home from the hospital, I was a mess. I was in love with my tiny baby but also reeling from the shock of it all, in pain daily, struggling with breastfeeding, not sleeping and unable to get about much.

I had people wanting to come and meet my new baby and see me and I agreed in a haze. Most people just came over, sat on the sofa and chatted, drank tea and had a cuddle with the baby. They brought cute outfits and toys as gifts for my daughter. These were all appreciated but piled up in the unused nursery whilst baby slept on my chest each night as I laid awake stressing about why she wasn’t sleeping.

They said you should...

Every day on various Facebook support groups, or when I speak to parents, on television and everywhere you go I hear variations of the same phrase when it comes to parenting, particularly young babies;

"They say you should have them in their own room at 6 months",

"They say you shouldn't have them in your bed",

"They say you shouldn't hold them all the time or they'll always want holding",

"They say you should set up a feeding schedule and stick to it",

"They say you should jump off a cliff..."..?!

It actually infuriates me when people say these things, and yet I used to listen and believe them.

Bedtime battles and bad babies

20/5/2019

“She finally gave up the fight”
“Yes, we won!”
“Don’t let them win”
“Is he good?”

We often use these kinds of phrases about even the most peaceful of bedtimes as we try our best to lull and soothe our little ones to sleep. The language of conflict often gets used even more when we are struggling, and it feels true. We feel like we were fighting for them to sleep, and that they were fighting against us.

Now, few of us are genuinely adopting military tactics in our children’s bedtimes (unless we are going out, when we plan their bedtimes using every ounce of strategy we possess, only to see those go the least to plan!) But there’s nothing wrong with the phrase “bedtime battles,” right? It’s just a phrase. We don’t really rule our children under martial law. No, of course we don’t, but that isn’t really the point.

5 reasons I don't sleep when my baby sleeps

10/9/2017

My baby doesn't sleep through the night and I know I am not alone there!

When I tell people I am tired and that she doesn't "sleep through the night", they either tell me how to "fix" my baby (who by the way, isn't broken, she's normal) or they tell me to sleep when she sleeps. Now I know everyone means well and actually, sleep when baby sleeps is much better advice than routines, sleep training or early weaning (but I am not getting into that now). However, there are a few problems with trying to sleep whenever my baby sleeps:
